Welcome to LowCarbDr.com
I came to a turning point in my career when I discovered that I was prediabetic despite being physically active. I was taught by those that trained me that I needed to eat frequent, small meals. I was instructed to eat low-fat and “carb-load” the night before a race. I used carbohydrate gels during endurance events (I had been a half and full-marathon runner previously). Why was I overweight and prediabetic? I did not want to take medications to treat diabetes. I did not want to check my blood sugars. I sure did not want to have complications like those that many of my diabetic patients experienced. I opened my mind to alternative nutrition recommendations because what I was doing was not working. I discovered the low-carbohydrate community of physicians and patients in this journey. After studying and listening to physician and patient testimonials, I decided to try this personally. It was easy and I lost 30 lbs. in about 2 months, actually exercising less than usual. This was only the beginning. I examined my medical training. I started to become critical about studies and evidence that were used to make treatment guidelines. I also started layering other healthy lifestyle interventions on top of the newly-discovered diet. I feel that the current state of medicine in the USA over-emphasizes procedures and pharmaceutical prescriptions. Statistics indicate that even despite these technologies, our health is worsening. I have pursued additional education and training in the history of medicine. This education has enlightened me regarding treatments that have been available for many years, but have been pushed to the side for various reasons. I have reviewed evidence that supports the effectiveness of lifestyle medicine. I have noticed that lifestyle intervention is very effective in improving disease and quality of life in myself, my family, and many of my current patients.
